This page sets out the composition, certification, dimensions, weight and finish of the materials behind our wall panelling, mouldings and boards — the detail you'd expect to see on a manufacturer's data sheet, written so it's actually readable.

The materials behind our range
Three core materials cover everything we sell. Each product page also states the specific material, thickness and finish for that item.
Standard MDF
Medium‑density fibreboard made from compressed wood fibres bound with resin under heat and pressure. Used in our Shaker, tongue & groove and dado panelling kits. Smooth‑sanded, paintable, and supplied either raw/sanded or with a light factory‑applied tinted finish depending on the listing.
MR MDF (moisture‑resistant)
A higher‑density, green‑tinted MDF manufactured with moisture‑resistant resin additives, used for our bathroom‑ and kitchen‑suitable board range. Stronger and more stable in humid conditions than standard MDF, though still not waterproof.
Solid pine (softwood)
Used in our Cheshire Mouldings dado rails, decorative capping and mitred slat kits. A natural softwood, supplied sanded and either raw or factory‑primed, suitable for painting or staining.
Formaldehyde emissions & indoor air quality
MDF is manufactured using a resin binder, and resin systems can release small amounts of formaldehyde as the board cures and ages. This is a normal characteristic of engineered wood products generally, not something specific to our boards — what matters is how tightly that emission is controlled.
The MDF and HDF board we build with is sourced exclusively from suppliers independently certified to CARB (California Air Resources Board) Phase 2 and EPA TSCA Title VI formaldehyde emission standards. These are among the strictest internationally recognised low‑emission standards for engineered wood, and certification means the board has been independently tested and verified to fall within their low‑emission limits before it ever reaches our workshop.
- Suitable for everyday indoor use in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and most domestic interiors.
- Sealing cut edges and painted faces with primer and paint further reduces any residual off‑gassing over time.
- Ventilate the room normally during and shortly after installation, as you would after any DIY or decorating work.

FSC chain‑of‑custody sourcing
Where our timber and board actually comes from, and how that's verified.
What FSC certification means
The MDF, HDF and pine we use is sourced from suppliers certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain‑of‑custody scheme. This means the raw timber can be traced back through the supply chain to forests independently audited against FSC's environmental and social standards, rather than from unverified or undocumented sources.
Why we choose certified suppliers
We select board and timber suppliers on the basis of verified, responsible sourcing rather than simply the lowest available price. Because we manufacture in‑house, we can specify FSC chain‑of‑custody material as standard across our range rather than relying on whatever a third‑party importer happens to stock.

Finish types & what arrives at your door
Knowing the finish before you buy avoids any surprise about what work is left for you to do.
Raw, sanded MDF
Supplied smooth‑sanded but unpainted and unprimed. This is our most common finish — you'll need to prime and paint after installation. Stated clearly on the relevant product page.
Factory‑tinted or primed
Some kits (for example certain tongue & groove and MR MDF lines) are supplied with a light green or grey factory tint. This is a manufacturing tint, not a decorative final coat — it is still paintable and intended to be finished by you.
Pine, paintable & stainable
Mouldings and dado rails are supplied as sanded solid pine, suitable for either painting or staining/varnishing depending on the look you want.
Product safety & regulatory compliance

- General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (as retained in UK law) require that products placed on the UK market are safe under normal or reasonably foreseeable use, and that we provide consumers with the information needed to assess and avoid risks — which is the purpose of this page.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires that goods match their description — including stated material, dimensions and finish — and are of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.
- UK REACH (retained chemicals regulation) governs the use of chemical substances, including resin binders, in manufactured goods sold in the UK; our board suppliers' CARB and EPA TSCA Title VI certifications support compliance with these wider chemical‑safety expectations.
- Google Shopping product data policies require accurate, specific and non‑misleading material, dimension and identifier information for any product listed in Shopping ads or the free listings — the specifications on each of our product pages are kept aligned with this page.
