This page explains every size, thickness, and length option available across our range, how to measure your wall accurately, how to calculate the number of panels you need, and your rights when something does not match what was ordered.

Panel dimensions at a glance

All Lunaire Works panels are manufactured from FSC-certified Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and supplied raw and smooth, ready for your choice of paint. Every dimension below is the declared finished size of the panel as it leaves our workshop.

Important — all measurements are nominal finished sizes. A declared "100 cm" panel will measure between 999 mm and 1,001 mm. Our standard manufacturing tolerance is ±1 mm on length and ±0.5 mm on width and thickness. This is standard practice for precision-cut MDF throughout the UK joinery trade. If you are working to very tight tolerances, please contact us before ordering.

How to measure your wall

Accurate wall measurements are the foundation of a successful panelling project. Follow these steps before placing any order. If you are unsure at any stage, our team is happy to guide you — contact us at info@lunaireworks.com or call +44 33 0043 9923.

    Measure the total wall width Using a steel tape measure (not a cloth tape), measure horizontally from one corner or fixed edge to the other. Measure at three heights — skirting level, mid-wall, and ceiling level — and record the smallest reading. Walls in older UK properties are rarely perfectly square.
  • 2
    Measure the total wall height Measure vertically from the top of your skirting board (not the floor) to your intended top line, whether that is ceiling height, dado height, picture-rail height, or a defined mid-wall zone. Record the height in millimetres for accuracy.
  • 3
    Identify & subtract obstructions Note the position and size of any windows, doors, sockets, switches, radiators, or alcoves within the wall area. If you are panelling around these, subtract their widths from the total run. If you are continuing over them with a broken panel run, calculate each uninterrupted section separately.
  • 4
    Decide your panel gap (reveal) Our shaker-style panels are spaced apart to create a defined shadow gap. The most common reveal gaps are 15 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm. Your chosen gap affects the total number of panels and the total coverage. Decide this before calculating quantities.

    Write all measurements down in millimetres Convert everything to millimetres before calculating. Working in a single unit eliminates conversion errors. Record: total width (mm), total height or panel length needed (mm), number of obstructions and their widths (mm), and your chosen gap width (mm).
  • 6
    Add an overage allowance Always add a minimum of 10% to your calculated panel count to allow for cutting waste, returns, and end panels that need trimming. On larger walls or complex layouts with alcoves, add 15%. MDF cannot be returned once cut or painted.

Calculating your panel quantity

The formula below applies to shaker-style vertical slat installations using our 100 mm wide panels. Use this method to arrive at the correct number of panels before ordering.

Step-by-step quantity formula

    Panel unit (mm) Panel face width + your chosen gap = panel unit.
    Example: 100 mm panel + 20 mm gap = 120 mm unit
  • B
    Number of panels Total wall width ÷ panel unit = number of panels (round to nearest whole number).
    Example: 3,000 mm ÷ 120 mm = 25 panels
  • C
    Panel length Match your wall height to our standard lengths or choose a custom length. Standard options: 50 cm, 100 cm, 120 cm. For heights between 100 cm and 120 cm — choose 120 cm and trim on site.
  • D
    Add waste allowance Add 10% to your panel count and round up to the next whole number. On complex walls, use 15%.
    Example: 25 panels × 1.10 = 27.5 → order 28 panels

Choosing your panel thickness: 6 mm vs 9 mm

Our MDF shaker slats are available in two thicknesses. The right choice depends on the look you want and the wall surface you are fixing to.

6 mm Panels

  • More subtle, flat visual profile
  • Lighter weight — easier solo installation
  • Works well on plasterboard walls and flat plaster
  • Best choice for smaller rooms or low ceilings
  • Adds approximately 6 mm projection from the wall surface

9 mm Panels Most Popular

  • Deeper shadow gap — bolder, more architectural look
  • Greater rigidity — recommended for longer panels (>100 cm)
  • Recommended for rooms with high-traffic or humidity variation
  • Adds approximately 9 mm projection from the wall surface
  • Available with optional Green Moisture-Resistant MDF upgrade (see product listing)
Green Moisture-Resistant MDF (MRMDF): For bathrooms, cloakrooms, utility rooms, or any wall where moisture levels are elevated, we strongly recommend upgrading to our Green Moisture-Resistant MDF at the 9 mm thickness. Standard MDF will swell and delaminate if it becomes wet. This upgrade is listed as an optional add-on on the relevant product pages. UK Building Regulations Part C (Site preparation and resistance to contaminants and moisture) should be considered when specifying materials in wet areas.

Standard kits vs custom sizing

We offer both pre-counted standard kits and fully custom-cut panels to suit every project, from a small alcove to a full-room renovation.

Standard kits

Standard kits are our most popular option and are designed to cover the majority of common UK living room, hallway, and bedroom feature wall layouts.

  • 12-Panel Kit: 6 × 100 cm + 6 × 50 cm — suited for walls up to approximately 2.4 m wide
  • Bulk 90-Pack Kit: 90 MDF slats in a mix of full-length (100 cm) and half-length (50 cm) — suited for larger walls, multiple walls, or full-room projects
  • Pre-mitered moulding kits (MWPKT-2, MWPKT-4): supplied as finished frame kits for picture-frame panel effects, supplied pre-primed and ready to paint

If your measurements indicate a standard kit is close but slightly short, we recommend ordering the next kit size up or adding individual panels to your basket.

Custom sizing

Our Build Your Own product listing lets you order individual MDF panels cut to any length you specify, giving you full control over the layout without over-ordering.

  • Specify any panel length from 30 cm to 240 cm (subject to material availability — contact us for lengths above 120 cm)
  • Choose 6 mm or 9 mm thickness at point of order
  • Add special instructions in the order notes at checkout — we cut and pack each custom order individually
  • Custom orders are cut to your specification and cannot be returned unless there is a manufacturing defect — please double-check all measurements before confirming

Dado rail & moulding sizing

Understanding where dado rails and capping mouldings sit — and how to size them — is essential for a polished finish. This section covers the standard positioning guidance for UK residential installations.

Dado rail positioning

The traditional UK dado rail position is at 900 mm from the finished floor level — roughly hand height, originally designed to protect walls from chair backs. Modern installations place dado rails anywhere between 750 mm and 1,100 mm depending on ceiling height and aesthetic preference.

  • Low ceiling (<2.4 m): Position dado rail at 750–800 mm
  • Standard ceiling (2.4–2.7 m): Traditional 900 mm from floor
  • High ceiling (>2.7 m): Consider 1,000–1,100 mm for better visual proportion
  • Our dado rails are sold in 100 cm (1 m) lengths — calculate total linear metres of your wall perimeter and round up to the next whole metre

Picture rail & capping moulding

For panel installations that run to ceiling height or that have a defined top edge, our capping mouldings and picture rails are cut to 100 cm lengths and can be ordered in multiples.

  • Measure the total perimeter of the wall area to be capped and order the equivalent linear metres in 1 m sections
  • Joints between sections should be cut at 45° for internal and external corners — allow an extra 10% for mitre waste
  • All pre-mitered Cheshire Moulding kits include corner cuts — no further cutting is needed at internal corners for those specific kit sizes
Kit quantity selector: When you add dado rails to your order via the product page, quantities are listed as number of 100 cm rails (e.g. "2 × 100 cm Dado Rails = 2 m"). Select enough to cover your total linear footage plus the 10% waste allowance.

Manufacturing accuracy & our tolerance policy

We use precision CNC-controlled cutting equipment at our Cambridgeshire workshop. Every panel is cut from sheets that are themselves calibrated to BS EN 622-5 (standards for fibre boards — requirements for dry process boards) or equivalent. Here is what our tolerances mean in practice.

Length tolerance

±1 mm on all declared panel lengths. A 100 cm (1,000 mm) panel will measure between 999 mm and 1,001 mm. This is within the industry standard for precision-cut MDF joinery in the UK.

Width & thickness tolerance

±0.5 mm on declared face width (100 mm) and thickness (6 mm or 9 mm). Variation within this range is a natural characteristic of sheet material and does not constitute a defect.

Surface & edge finish

All panels are supplied with a sanded, smooth face. Minor tool marks on cut edges are normal and will be concealed by paint or filler as part of your installation process. These do not constitute a defect.

What constitutes a genuine manufacturing defect?

A panel is considered defective only if: (a) its measurement falls outside the stated tolerance range; (b) it has visible delamination or internal voids that were not caused by incorrect storage or installation; or (c) it is a materially different size from what was ordered (e.g. a 50 cm panel supplied where a 100 cm panel was ordered). Minor surface blemishes that are removed during sanding and painting are not defects.

UK consumer rights & size-related returns

Your statutory rights as a UK consumer are fully protected when you shop with Lunaire Works. Here is exactly how those rights apply to sizing-related situations, written clearly and without ambiguity.

Standard Orders If the panels are the wrong size for your wall

If you have ordered a standard kit (not a custom-cut order) and the panels do not fit your wall because you chose the wrong size, this is not a product defect and does not give rise to a statutory return right under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. However, under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, you have a 14-day cooling-off period from the date you receive your order, during which you may return unused, uncut, and unpainted standard panels for a full product refund, provided:

  • The panels are returned in their original, unmodified condition (not sanded, cut, drilled, painted, or adhered)
  • You notify us of your intention to return within 14 calendar days of delivery by emailing info@lunaireworks.com
  • You cover the return postage cost, as the return is due to a size selection error rather than a product fault
  • Items are received by us within 28 days of your original delivery

Custom Orders Custom-cut and bespoke panels

Panels that have been cut to a customer-specified length — including those ordered through our Build Your Own product — are custom-manufactured goods and are exempt from the 14-day cancellation right under Regulation 28(1)(b) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. This exemption applies because the goods are made to your personal specifications and cannot be re-stocked. This does not affect your rights if the panels are defective or not as described.

Defective Goods If panels arrive outside stated tolerances

If panels arrive outside our stated manufacturing tolerances (see above) or do not match the size stated in your order confirmation, this constitutes a breach of contract under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (Section 9 — satisfactory quality, Section 11 — as described). In this case, you are entitled to:

  • A short-term right to reject — a full refund if you notify us within 30 days of delivery
  • A right to repair or replacement — within 30 days to 6 months of delivery
  • We will arrange and pay for return collection of defective panels — you do not pay return postage for faulty goods

To report a sizing defect, email info@lunaireworks.com with your order number and photographs of the panels next to a tape measure showing the discrepancy.

Our additional sizing guarantee

In addition to your statutory rights, Lunaire Works operates a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the size accuracy of any standard (non-custom) panel for any reason, contact us within 30 days of delivery and we will work with you to find a resolution — whether that is an exchange for a different length, a credit, or a refund.

This voluntary guarantee is offered in addition to, and does not replace, your rights under UK law.

Tongue & Groove Note — effective coverage width: The T&G WPKT7A panel has a 125 mm face width, but when interlocked, the groove reduces visible face width slightly. The effective visual reveal per panel once installed is approximately 115–118 mm. Calculate your quantities using 117 mm per unit plus your chosen gap.

Sizing & measurement FAQ

Answers to the most common questions our customers ask before ordering.

Yes, and this is the most common approach. The 12-Panel Shaker Kit includes both lengths specifically to allow you to mix panels at dado height. Typically, 100 cm panels run above the dado rail and 50 cm panels run below — or vice versa depending on your wall height and design preference. Both lengths are cut from the same 100 mm wide stock, so they will align perfectly when fixed with consistent spacing.

Yes. You would order 100 cm panels and trim them to 87.5 cm on site using a mitre saw or fine-toothed hand saw. MDF cuts very cleanly. Alternatively, use our Build Your Own listing to order panels pre-cut to exactly 875 mm — this avoids on-site cutting entirely. If you choose to order pre-cut panels at a custom length, please measure twice before submitting your order, as custom lengths cannot be returned or exchanged.

Our standard off-the-shelf maximum is 120 cm (1,200 mm). For lengths beyond 120 cm, please contact us at info@lunaireworks.com before ordering. We can accommodate longer panels on a made-to-order basis subject to material availability, but these require additional lead time and are subject to a bespoke pricing quotation. Panels over 150 cm at the 6 mm thickness are not recommended as they are prone to bowing in transit.

Standard MDF shaker panels and Build Your Own panels are supplied raw — smooth and sanded, ready for your choice of primer and paint. The Cheshire Mouldings MWPKT-2 and MWPKT-4 kits are supplied pre-primed and pre-mitered, meaning they need only a light sanding and your chosen topcoat. Pre-primed panels have a slight texture visible before painting — this is the primer coat, not a surface defect.

The most popular gap sizes are 15 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm. A 15 mm gap gives a busier, more textured look. A 20 mm gap is the standard recommendation and tends to suit most room sizes and panel heights. A 25 mm gap creates a bolder, more open feel and is popular in larger rooms and hallways. There is no single correct answer — it is an aesthetic choice. To visualise the difference, lay a few panels flat on the floor with spacers at each gap size before fixing.

Return postage for size selection errors is the customer's responsibility. Panels that have been sanded, cut, painted, or adhered to a wall cannot be returned.

Our standard MDF panels are manufactured to BS EN 622-5 and are CARB Phase 2 / EPA TSCA Title VI compliant (low formaldehyde emission). For UK Building Regulations purposes, standard MDF is classified as Class D-s2,d2 under BS EN 13501-1. If your project requires a higher fire classification (e.g. Class B for escape routes in HMOs, commercial premises, or properties covered by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005), you should specify a fire-retardant-treated MDF and discuss this requirement with a qualified fire-safety consultant before ordering. We do not currently stock FR-MDF as a standard line, but can source it on request — contact us at info@lunaireworks.com for a quotation.
