VAT & Tax Policy

VAT & Tax Policy

Every price you see already includes VAT. No surprises at checkout.

Lunaire Works is operated by STERZEAL HATS LIMITED, a company registered in England and Wales and registered for UK VAT under number GB433989551. This page explains, in plain English, exactly how VAT applies to the wall panelling and joinery products we sell, how it's calculated, and what you'll find on your invoice.

Last updated & effective: 25 June 2026

Who's actually charging the VAT

When you buy from lunaireworks.com, you're buying directly from STERZEAL HATS LIMITED, the registered company that designs, manufactures and ships every panel from our workshop in Cambridgeshire. We are not a marketplace, a dropshipper, or a reseller acting on behalf of another retailer — we are the seller and manufacturer of record for everything on this website, and we are the business legally responsible for accounting to HMRC for the VAT charged on your order.

Because we sell and ship exclusively within the United Kingdom, every transaction on this website is a domestic UK sale. There's no import VAT, no customs declaration and no cross‑border duty for you to think about — the price you pay at checkout is the final price, full stop.

VAT is already in the price you see

No "+VAT" added at checkout. No hidden tax line that appears after you've decided to buy.

What this means for you

Every price displayed on lunaireworks.com — on collection pages, individual product pages, the cart, and the checkout — is shown in pounds sterling (GBP) and is fully inclusive of UK VAT at the rate that applies to that product. The figure you see is the figure you pay for the goods themselves; delivery, where it isn't free, is calculated separately and shown clearly at checkout before you enter your payment details.

This follows the UK's general retail pricing rule: when we advertise to consumers, the headline price must be the total, VAT‑inclusive price. We don't operate a "VAT‑exclusive" pricing model anywhere on this website.

If you're VAT‑registered yourself

If you're ordering as a VAT‑registered business or sole trader and need the net (pre‑VAT) price for your own accounting, that figure is shown alongside the VAT amount on the invoice we issue with every order — see Invoices & receipts below. We don't currently offer a separate "trade checkout" that displays prices excluding VAT, since UK law requires us to advertise the VAT‑inclusive price to all customers regardless of business status.

The VAT rate that applies to our products

Straightforward, because our range is straightforward.

Every product we sell — tongue & groove panelling, Shaker‑style panel kits, stair and bedroom panelling sets, MDF and moisture‑resistant MR MDF board, mouldings, dado rails, adhesives and fixings — is a manufactured building and joinery material. None of our products fall into a reduced‑rate or zero‑rated category under UK VAT law (those categories are reserved for specific items such as most food, books, children's clothing, or domestic energy). As a result:

Standard‑rated goods

Applies to every product sold on lunaireworks.com, with no exceptions.

20% VAT
Worth knowing: the 20% standard rate has applied to goods of this kind since 4 January 2011 and is the default rate under the Value Added Tax Act 1994 for anything that isn't specifically reduced‑rated, zero‑rated or exempt. We review this position regularly and will update this page immediately if HMRC changes the rate or reclassifies any product we sell.

How we work out the VAT on your order

Because our shelf prices already include VAT, the calculation runs in reverse from what you might expect: we start from the VAT‑inclusive selling price and divide it out to show you the net price and the VAT element separately on your invoice.

For a standard‑rated item at 20% VAT, the net price is the VAT‑inclusive price divided by 1.2, and the VAT amount is the difference between the two. You never need to do this calculation yourself — it's done automatically by our checkout and shown in full on the invoice emailed to you after every order.

Total you pay£120.00

Your VAT invoice & receipt

Sent automatically — no need to ask, but we're happy to resend or adapt one if you need it.

What's on it

Every order placed on lunaireworks.com generates an automatic order confirmation and receipt by email, which together function as a full VAT invoice. It shows our registered company name and address, our VAT registration number (GB433989551), the invoice date, a description and quantity of each item, the net price, the VAT rate and amount applied, and the total amount charged.

Need something different?

If you need the invoice addressed to a different billing name (for example, your limited company rather than your personal name), or you need a copy reissued, email us at info@lunaireworks.com with your order number and we'll sort it out within one working day.

Ordering as a trade customer or business

The VAT treatment doesn't change — what changes is the paperwork you can use afterwards.

A growing number of our customers are tradespeople, interior designers, landlords and small businesses. If that's you, the price you pay at checkout is still the VAT‑inclusive price shown on the site — we don't run a separate net‑of‑VAT trade price list. However, if your business is itself VAT‑registered, the VAT invoice we send with your order shows the net price and VAT amount separately, which you can use to reclaim the input VAT through your own VAT return, subject to HMRC's normal rules on input tax recovery.

VAT on returns, refunds & cancellations

If your order is refunded, the VAT comes back with it — automatically, in full.

How refunded VAT works

Because the price you paid already included VAT, any refund we issue — whether for a return under our 30‑day money‑back guarantee, a cancelled order, or a damaged or faulty item — is refunded as the full VAT‑inclusive amount you originally paid. You don't need to claim the VAT back separately, and we don't deduct it from your refund.

Custom & made‑to‑measure orders

Custom or made‑to‑measure panels are produced specifically for your order and, like the rest of our range, are charged VAT at the standard 20% rate. The VAT treatment of a refund on a custom item (where one is due, for example because it arrived damaged or faulty) follows the same rule above: the full amount you paid, including VAT, is returned to you.

Full details: for the timeframes, conditions and process for returns and refunds themselves, see our Refund Policy. This page covers the tax treatment only.

The UK law behind this policy

We don't expect you to read the statutes — but we think you're entitled to know they exist and what they require of us.

  • Value Added Tax Act 1994 — sets out the legal framework for VAT registration, the rate that applies to our products, and our duty to account for VAT to HMRC.
  • Price Marking Order 2004 — requires that prices shown to consumers are the final, VAT‑inclusive selling price, which is why every price on this site already includes VAT.
  • Consumer Rights Act 2015 — requires goods to be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality, and requires the total price (including VAT) to be made clear before you complete your purchase.
  • Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 — requires us to give you clear information about the total price, including tax, before you're bound by a distance contract.
  • Companies (Trading Disclosures) Regulations 2008 — requires us to clearly display our registered company name, registration number and registered office address, which we do throughout this website.
Questions about a specific charge? If anything on your invoice doesn't look right or you'd simply like it explained, email info@lunaireworks.com with your order number and we'll go through it with you line by line.
